Homepage Directness Index
Homepage Directness Index — v1

How much information do B2B SaaS homepages state directly — and how much do they leave readers to infer?

This project measures how companies communicate — not whether one communication style is universally better than another.

100 companies analyzed with claude-sonnet-5 (prompt v4) against six dimensions: product category, target customer, primary problem, core product, differentiation, and evidence of results. Each is classified as stated directly (Explicit), left to be inferred (Implied), or not addressed at all (Missing) — from the homepage text alone, no outside knowledge, no other pages.

Key findings

  • Evidence/social proof is the most explicit dimension studied (94% Explicit) — nearly every homepage backs its claims with a number, named customer, or case study.
  • Target customer is the least explicit dimension (13% Explicit), with Primary problem close behind (14%) — most homepages describe outcomes and features without naming who they're for or what problem they solve.

About this research

The Homepage Directness Index is an ongoing research project by Pinwheel Media exploring how companies communicate what they do. Our goal is to better understand the patterns, tradeoffs, and trends that shape how companies present themselves online. While Pinwheel Media helps organizations improve their visibility across traditional and AI-powered search, this research is intended as a public resource for marketers, founders, and product teams.
